A READING CHALLENGE FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS AT WILLARD
Everyone loves BINGO! Students in 3rd and 4th grade can read 5 books to earn a Bingo then turn in reviews to earn a free book.
Third and fourth graders are invited to have fun with the Library Learning Center’s Bluestem Bingo. Students will read books to complete a bingo. Each row, column, or diagonal line of 5 titles on our Bingo sheet has books from different genres. Students can choose ANY row, column, or diagonal line to complete.
What are Bluestem books?
Named in honor of Big Bluestem, which is the Illinois state prairie grass, this honor is awarded to books through a selection and voting process. The list of winning books includes timeless classics and current titles as well as both nonfiction and fiction titles. Bluestem books were chosen for students in grades 3-5 and are on the lists for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. For third grade students, we add additional titles that are at an appropriate reading level. |
What is a genre?
A genre is a category that a book may fall into such as comedy, horror, science fiction, action/adventure, romance, travel, mystery, science, art, and many more categories! Fiction and nonfiction books can fall into almost every genre depending on how the author wrote the book. Each row, column, or diagonal line on our Bingo sheet has titles from multiple genres to encourage students to read outside their "normal" type of books. Some are shorter books, some longer; some are fiction and some are nonfiction. By the end of a Bingo (a full row, column, or diagonal line), students will have read 5 phenomenal books! |
